Myth Monday: The Science Behind the Results at Heavenly Plastic Surgery
Plastic surgery comes with a lot of opinions—but not all of them are grounded in medical science.
At Heavenly Plastic Surgery, patient education is the cornerstone of our practice. Throughout the summer, our Instagram Myth Monday series has tackled the most common misconceptions submitted by our followers. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Nguyen is here to move past the rumors and break down the actual science of what we do.
Here are the facts behind four of the most common plastic surgery myths:
MYTH: “My skin will look unnatural or ‘pulled’ after surgery.”
THE FACT: The “pulled” look is a hallmark of outdated surgical techniques. Modern plastic surgery focuses on the deeper foundational tissues, not just the skin.
The Science: In body contouring procedures like a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), Dr. Nguyen doesn’t rely on your skin to hold tension. Instead, he acts as an internal sculptor, repairing and tightening the underlying abdominal muscle wall (correcting a condition called diastasis recti). The skin is then gently re-draped over this restored, firm foundation. This results in a naturally smooth abdomen without a stretched or unnatural appearance. Dr. Nguyen applies this same principle of deep-tissue support to facial procedures like facelifts, ensuring natural-looking results from head to toe.
MYTH: “Plastic surgery doesn’t last.”
THE FACT: While surgery cannot stop the natural aging process, it creates structural changes that are meant to endure.
The Timeline: Body contouring offers some of the most permanent physical changes. With liposuction, the targeted fat cells are permanently removed and do not grow back. A tummy tuck permanently removes excess skin and securely repairs separated muscles. Similarly, procedures like facelifts essentially reset the aging clock by 7 to 10 years.
The Caveat: The remaining fat cells in your body can still expand if you gain weight, and your skin will continue to age naturally due to gravity and time. Maintaining a stable weight, staying active, and following a healthy lifestyle are the keys to protecting your surgical investment for decades.
MYTH: “You have to get implants to look good after a breast lift.”
THE FACT: A breast lift (mastopexy) addresses position, while implants address volume. They are two entirely separate tools.
Auto-Augmentation: If you are happy with the actual amount of breast tissue you have but unhappy with sagging (ptosis), a lift alone is often perfect. Dr. Nguyen uses specialized techniques to reshape and project your own existing tissue, creating a perkier, rounded profile without the use of foreign devices. Implants are only necessary if you specifically want to increase your cup size or add upper-pole fullness.
MYTH: “Liposuction is a weight-loss procedure.”
THE FACT: Liposuction is purely for structural body contouring. It is not an alternative to diet or bariatric surgery.
The Safety Limit: For patient safety, board-certified surgeons generally limit fat removal to a maximum of 4 to 5 liters per outpatient procedure.
The Ideal Candidate: Liposuction is designed for patients at a stable weight who are battling genetically stubborn pockets of fat—like the flanks, lower abdomen, back, or thighs—that resist exercise. It sculpts the silhouette and improves proportions; it doesn’t change the number on the scale drastically.
The Truth About Plastic Surgery? It’s Highly Anatomical.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer in aesthetic surgery. Your unique muscle structure, skin elasticity, and medical history dictate your surgical plan. We believe education should always come before the operating room.
